Future Leaders and Our History
The reason the Indianapolis Youth Leadership Academy exists, a need and a purpose
At few times in human history has the need for leaders been more critical than today. Our world is moving rapidly toward one where technology and artificial intelligence are replacing increasing numbers of tasks once performed by humans. Yet, human beings are not programmable carbon copies and will forever have desires, emotions, and physical needs separating us one from another. It is doubtful there will ever be a technology with the ability to determine what truly motivates the individual they are scanning. We are unique creatures and organizing a diverse group to get something done takes the skills of leadership.
In the future, no matter what form of technology we may possess, our society will need leaders who understand situational differences and can utilize their influence over others to build a cohesive working unit. The leader must teach, coach, direct, and support those who are working with one another, attempting to accomplish a mission. When a person utilizes leadership, they are completing the task efficiently, and being economical with the finances, resources, and the personnel involved. Effective leaders can transcend personal wants and requirements, creating purpose and progress.
On an individual level, you personally need a knowledge of leadership to build self-confidence and to create your own personal and organizational success. Your use of leadership clarifies the vision of your future and the task or mission you are attempting to complete. Leadership is a basic building block of your own character.
To lead or to follow is a choice each of us must make in life. If you choose to lead it will be your ideas, and your visions moving your career, your community, your friends and family toward success, fulfillment, and ultimate goals. Take this opportunity to enter the future as a leader.

“This was truly the most humbling and life changing experience of my life, learning how to lead both myself and others down a path of success. I think these are the skills my generation, as well as past and future generations, need to bring society together and finally understand one another. It’s not our differences that create conflict, but rather our lack of understanding.”

Academy History
The IYLA is modeled after the lessons learned in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Leadership Academy which introduces the finer details of leadership to public safety officers and government officials. There was an immediate realization leadership is both an intuitive art to be developed and a technical skill to be learned. With nothing more than an idea, a shoestring budget, and a passion to create a better future for our young people the Indianapolis Youth Leadership Academy was born.
The Academy was formed to encourage the growth, development, training, and motivation of future leaders, preparing them to meet the challenges they will face in their continuing education, careers, and families in the coming decades. It is our goal to provide a positive environment where aspiring high school aged youth can learn the basics of leadership and become informed, capable leaders who assume active roles in the growth of our community.
After two years of development the most important concepts were introduced to the youth curriculum and the first class was conducted in 2018, testing the ability of the young people to grasp the concepts as well as the material presented. The first two classes had a combined enrollment of 53 students. The instruction was a success and the expectations for the young people to learn were greatly exceeded. We are under the fiscal sponsorship of the Resources for Our Community (R.O.C.), a 501(c)3. We have conducted one class each year since then. In the near future, funding permitting, we hope to have two classes each year.
